The exploration
of music in the context of our time is a challenge that fuses
and energizes the unique musical community at UCSD. UCSD Music
is perhaps most importantly a safe haven for a sharp clash
of ideas. The community's overlapping foci - improvisation,
scholarship, technology, composition and performance - reveal
a field of rich tradition in constant expansion, instantly
splintering, thoughtfully reinvented. We who have committed
our professional lives to the growth and sustenance of this
community aspire to sustain an atmosphere of continually tested
constraints and liberties, where opportunities are so numerous,
tempting and inspiring, that at times the central challenge
is in finding the wisdom of what NOT to do.
The
CD set is a compilation of musics from the UCSD graduate school
community. Some contributions are drawn from archive recordings,
others are more carefully recorded special projects and dissertation
works.
The
repertoire was selected by graduate students and faculty of
the department, and this release is the first in an annual
non-profit production of the UCSD Music Recording Committee. |
