RE-SCHEDULED! UCSD'S CAMERA LUCIDA CHAMBER CONCERT ON KPBS-FM

UCSD's Charles Curtis hosts the debut broadcast of Camera Lucida, our new chamber music series--the broadcast has been re-scheduled for Saturday night, Nov. 1, 7 p.m., on KPBS-FM public radio (89.5, or streaming at kpbs.org). If you missed the excellent concert on Oct. 20 at the Neurosciences Institute Auditorium--or you simply want to hear the music again--here's your chance. Along with Charles on cello, performers are UCSD's Aleck Karis (piano) as well as the San Diego Symphony's Jeff Thayer (violin) and Che-Yen Chen (viola). Pieces are Beethoven's Serenade for String Trio, opus 8; and Dvorak's Piano Quartet in E-flat, opus 87. As host, Charles introduces the pieces and explains what to listen for. For lovers of classical music, the broadcast offers an unusual opportunity to hear these great compositions with a musician's ear to the details. Thanks to the Sam B. Ersan Chamber Music Fund for generous support. Mr. Ersan is a dedicated fan of classical music with a finely tuned sensibility for performances and concert halls--one of his favorite venues for acoustical perfection is the new Segerstrom Hall at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. Segerstrom Hall's acoustician was Russell Johnson, a contemporary of Cyril Harris, acoustician for UCSD's new Conrad Prebys Concert Hall, which opens in May 2009. Appreciation to KPBS and the station's program manager John Decker for making the Camera Lucida broadcasts possible; and to UCSD's Tom Erbe for recording the live concert. The second performance in the series, featuring pieces by Bach and Purcell, takes place Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. at the Neurosciences Institute. Tickets are $25/$10 student/free for UCSD students, available at the door or through UCSD Box Office (858.534.TIXS). This concert airs Dec.– at 7 p.m. on KPBS. KPBS will broadcast all five Camera Lucida concerts between now and this season's grand finale in UCSD's Conrad Prebys Concert Hall on June 1, 2009.
