IN A FROG'S EYE: SCHICK + ZIPORYN AT UCSD

Steven Schick continues to stir fresh musical gumbo at La Jolla Symphony & Chorus. In his second season as music director, Schick (also a renowned percussionist on UCSD's music faculty) hosted performer/composer Evan Ziporyn as special guest for LJS&C's "MOTION" concerts Dec. 6 and 7.

The program included pieces by Shostakovich and Stravinsky, along with Ziporyn's "Frog's Eye," inspired by his observation of a frog during a hot summer hike in the woods at Walden Pond.

Thursday evening December 5, Schick and Ziporyn performed new experimental music at UCSD's new venue The Loft, collaborating with dancer Allyson Green and Lux Boreal Contemporanea Danza.

When he's not busy with LJS&C, Schick plays with UCSD's resident percussion ensemble red fish blue fish. And he recently completed the CD "House of Mirrors" with trumpeter Ed Harkins (UCSD emeritus faculty) and bassist Mark Dresser (music faculty) that's earning great reviews including one at allaboutjazz.com.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports on Schick and Ziporyn at LJS&C (see link below).
