KAMZA AND BAR KAMZA: PROVOCATIVE, POLITICAL, JANUARY 15, 7 PM AT THE LOFT
Refined from its experimental debut last year, Shlomo Dubnov's Kamza and Bar Kamza becomes a more intense and focussed multimedia piece in its January 15 presentation at The Loft, UCSD's new experimental performance venue.
Dubnov, a member of the music faculty, was inspired by the Talmud and how its spiritual themes might apply to today's global politics and conflict. While it prominently features live performance and video, Kamza and Bar Kamza is more than a multimedia production. It's an interactive event that depends on audience response to achieve its full impact.
"The ultimate work of art is what the audience perceives of it," Dubnov says. "The whole idea is to get the audience perspective on the story, the music, the presentation. It's vital to learn what the audience takes from the experience and shares with us during the event."
In its unusual combination of human interaction, live performance, and technology, Kamza and Bar Kamza explores new modes of expression and communication inspired by today's fast-paced, technology-driven culture.
