CHAMBER CONCERT INAUGURATES COLLABORATION WITH S.D. SYMPHONY

A new collaboration between the Department of Music and the San Diego Symphony was christened with a June 8 concert of chamber music at the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla. Faculty members Aleck Karis (piano) and Charles Curtis (cello) teamed with symphony principals Jeff Thayer (first violin), Alex Palamidis (second violin) and Che-Yen Chen (viola) to perform pieces by Purcell, Mozart and Dvorak. It was obvious from their performance that the musicians had developed a special chemistry. The capacity crowd rewarded them with a standing ovation. Afterwards, the musicians and their audience---a mix of Department of Music fans and San Diego Symphony subscribers---spilled out into the courtyard for a reception with good wine and hors d'ouevres. Several people who attended the concert wrote letters of appreciation with comments such as "The concert was glorious!" and "excellent music in a fine setting". After this auspicious beginning, the creative partnership between the department and the symphony continues with a concert each quarter during the next academic year. The first one takes place November 2 at 8 p.m. at the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla.
