COMPOSER CHINARY UNG WINS ROCKEFELLER AWARD
|Composer and music professor Chinary Ung has won a $50,000 John D. Rockefeller 3rd Award from the Asian Cultural Council for his ongoing cultural exchange project focused on developing a new generation of innovative Cambodian composers. Ung has created a composer's institute serving Southeast Asia, has brought Cambodian performers to the U.S. and has spearheaded a series of recordings of Cambodian Music on the Folkways label. This year's Rockefeller Award went to three artists: in addition to Ung, winners are choreographer and dancer Pichet Klunchun and Indonesian arts administrator Amna Kusumo. Ung has been prolific over the past several months with an international string of concerts honoring his 70th birthday.|
