BUTTERFLIES + LA MONTE YOUNG + KAIJA SAARIAHO
UC San Diego cellist Jennifer Bewerse's Seven Butterflies project is among several performances by UCSD artists that will be featured at this year's WoW Festival, Oct. 9-11 at outdoor locations mostly near the UC San Diego Theatre District.
Seven Butterflies--which will take place near the Mandell Weiss Theatre--is a micro-concert featuring Kaija Saariaho's Sept Papillons for solo cello and La Monte Young's Composition 1960 No. 5.
Sept Papillons, which translates into "seven butterflies," is a seven-movement work for solo cello that features ethereal extended techniques evocative of swooping, swarming, or gently fluttering butterflies. Composition 1960 #5 is a text score with the instructions, Turn a butterfly (or any number of butterflies) loose in the performance area... the composition may be considered finished when the butterfly flies away.
Though they are an absolute complement to one another, these pieces have never been performed together. Seven Butterflies will be a simultaneous performance of these two works during which a live monarch butterfly will perform Composition 1960 #5 while Bewerse plays Sept Papillons. The result is a miniaturized concert, fitting for both the delicate nature of the butterflies and their symbolic ephemeralness. The concert is especially suited to Southern California, where hundreds of thousands of monarchs spend the October-March mating season in coastal locations said to include a UCSD eucalyptus grove.
Seven Butterflies will be performed on:
Friday Oct 9, 2:30 pm and 5 pm
Saturday Oct 10, noon and 5 pm
Sunday Oct 11, noon, 3 pm and 5 pm
Admission is FREE
