UC San Diego's Department of Music

July 17, 2006

In July, Rand Steiger returned to UCSD from a year's sabbatical in Boston to succeed John Fonville as chair of the department of music. His priorities include pushing ahead with construction of the new music building, and using the project as a catalyst for increasing the graduate fellowship fund. "We'll also strengthen our ties to the community," Steiger says, "and to other local musical organizations; recruit several new faculty members, particularly in performance and composition; and continue our extraordinary music technology efforts working with our faculty, Calit2, and CRCA." Steiger's year in Boston provided the kinds of rejuvenating experiences that will give him a fresh perspective on the role of chairman, as well as his work as a composer and professor of composition. He attended Boston Symphony Orchestra performances of music by Elliott Carter, Arnold Schoenberg, and other composers. And he witnessed the successful New York premiere of his piece "Ecosphere" at Columbia University. Steiger looks forward to sustaining the innovative mission set forth in 1966 by department founders Will Ogdon and Robert Erickson.
