UC San Diego's Department of Music

June 05, 2006

Twenty-four graduating seniors were lunched and honored at a Department of Music ceremony on June 5. Jimmy Cheatham, Kamau Kenyatta, John Fonville, Mark Dresser, Peter Otto and Aleck Karis were among faculty who helped congratulate the Class of 2006. Bachelor's degrees emphasized performance, composition, technology, jazz and the African Diaspora, music/humanities and ICAM (Interdisciplinary Computing in the Arts). Some of our grads are headed for graduate school, while others embark on music careers or take time to consider their options. Jazz saxophonist Adam Bovie plays saxophone on a cruise ship. Ann Cai heads to medical school at Harvard. Elika Winter teaches at Dingeman Elementary in Scripps Ranch. Aubrey Byerly begins graduate school in composition at SUNY in Buffalo, while Mike Stockalper considers law school. Barbara Jackson, the department's new MSO, was impressed with the group. "The Class of 2006 is officially my first graduating class with the Department of Music," Barbara says. "I had the opportunity to get to know some of the them. They are an amazing group and I wish them all well in their future endeavors."
