$50,000 GRANT AWARDED FOR CDS BY UCSD COMPOSERS

The Aaron Copland Foundation has awarded five grants totaling $50,000 to record and release the music of three UCSD composers. The composers, all professors in the Department of Music, are Roger Reynolds, Rand Steiger and Chinary Ung. Steiger's "Ecosphere", performed by the Ensemble Intercontemporain, is on an upcoming CD from EMF Media. Also funded is a DVD including a performance of Steiger's "Dreamscape". And chamber group Antares will release a CD of Reynolds' "Shadowed Narrative" together with a piece by Peter Lieberson. Ung's music will be on a CD also including compositions by Lou Harrison and Colin McPhee. UCSD's composers are in good company: others whose music is supported by this year's Copland grants including William Bolcom, George Crumb, Evan Ziporyn, John Harbison and Charles Ives.
