UC San Diego's Department of Music

Mark Dresser, ace contrabassist, improviser, and professor in UCSD's department of music, toured the world over the summer to rave reviews in many languages. In June in Boswil, Switzerland, he performed solo music with two videos (the animated "Chronicles of an Asthmatic Stripper" by Sarah Jane Lapp and the video "Line-Up" by Ligorano/Reese), and he played two movements of "Banquet" (composed for flutist Matthias Ziegler) for multiple flutes, bass and string quartet. Mark also joined hyperpianist Denmon Maroney for a duo at the L'Off Festival in Montreal, and in July played two concerts in Copenhagen, including a duo with bassist Irina-Kalina Goudeva at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Maroney joined Dresser again at Salzburg's Jazz and Improvised Music Workshop. In August, Dresser toured Japan with the Satoko Fujii Four--his tenth Japanese tour. Mark praised Japanese audiences as "the most attentive I've performed for". When not onstage, he found himself in a Japanese restaurant with a pet cricket displayed inside a cage shaped like a miniature green TV, and he sampled exotic ice cream flavors including wasabi, matcha (green tea), black sesame and miso. No wonder his playing was otherworldly. "I passed on the eel-flavored ice dream," Dresser said.
