Grad student Arshia Cont is becoming a force on many frontiers: this fall he won the French government's "Eiffel Excellence Award", which supports recruitment of future decision makers for higher education in France. Arshia also organized the first international Score Following Contest--score following recognizes real-time alignment of an incoming music signal to the music score. Winners will be announced Oct. 12 at the MIREX conference in Victoria, Canada. On Nov. 10 at the International Computer Music Conference, Arshia will chair a panel on "Musical Anticiation." The panel will also include UCSD computer music faculty member Shlomo Dubnov. Additionally, this fall Arshia presents his work at AbiALS in Rome (with Dubnov and Ircam's Gerard Assayag); and at the International Symposium on Music Information Retrieval in Montreal.
