STEVEN SCHICK TO DIRECT LA JOLLA SYMPHONY & CHORUS

Steven Schick has been appointed artistic director of La Jolla Symphony & Chorus. He has already planned a 2007-2008 season titled "On the Bridge" and featuring the American premiere of Philip Glass's "Concerto for Cello and Orchestra" (with Glass and cellist Wendy Sutter as special guests) plus works by Schick's frequent collaborator John Luther Adams, UCSD composer Chinary Ung, and legends ranging from Strauss, Haydn and Dvorak to Varese, Stravinsky and Berlioz. The season opens Nov. 3-4 and concludes June 6-8, 2008 with a program including the premiere of a new work by next year's winner of the UCSD Department of Music's Nee Commission. Schick is a world-renowned percussionist who directs the Department's percussion program, and whose recent projects include the book "The Percussionist's Art" and the three˜D "Xenakis Percussion Works" collection, a collaboration with UCSD's resident percussion ensemble red fish blue fish. Schick grew up on an Iowa farm near the cornfield where Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Richie Valens lost their lives in a 1&Epsilonι plane crash.
