ANTHONY DAVIS: N.Y TIMES AND CHARLESTON DIG "AMISTAD" AT SPOLETO
U.C. San Diego composer Anthony Davis's opera "Amistad" is inpired by the 1830s freeing of kidnapped slaves aboard the schooner Amistad due to the activism of black and white abolitionists. Davis completed his opera in 1997. This spring, a new streamlined version opens at the highly regarded Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina (a replica of the ship will dock nearby), and Davis is excited about the chance to revise one of his major works. In addition to the "More info" link we've provided to the New York Times, Charleston's newspaper coverage of Amistad is here: http://www.thestate.com/sunday-life/story/407471.html
