UC San Diego's Department of Music

Taiwanese fans thronged Red Fish Blue Fish in an autograph feeding frenzy in May at the Taipei International Percussion Convention hosted by the Ju Percussion Group. RFBF gave concerts at the National Concert Hall and in Tainan at the Municipal Cultural Center. Audiences of 800 to 1500 (including 100s of children) stoked the percussionists with mass enthusiasm. Hundreds lined up for autographs--something that just doesn't happen in the U.S. The group's Steven Schick opened both concerts with solo works by Stockhausen, Lucier, and Ferneyhough. After intermission, fellow RFBF Greg Stuart, Ross Karre, Justin Dehart, Jonathan Hepfer, Fabio Oliveira, and Matt Jenkins performed Grisey's Le Noir de l'Etoile. Schick gave a compelling lecture about complexity and its expression in percussion music. The festival featured groups, soloists, and pedagogues from around the world including Le Percussions de Strasbourg (the group responsible for commissioning and premiering the Grisey and many other works that Red Fish Blue Fish has performed), Tambuco (Mexico), Amadinda (Hungary), Emanuel Sejourne (France), and Keiko Abe (Japan). The Fish extend thanks to their hosts from the Ju Percussion Group. Don't miss the photo album at "more Info" (below).
