PROFESSORS RECOGNIZED FOR CUATRO CORRIDOS SUCCESS
Department of Music professors recognized for success of recently released recording of chamber opera Cuatro Corridos.
Professors Susan Narucki, Lei Liang, Aleck Karis and Pablo Gomez were recognized in the March edition of Opera News for their work on Cuatro Corridos, a chamber opera that premiered in 2013 and was released as a CD recording late last year on Bridge Records. Chosen as an Opera News Critics Choice recording, Cuatro Corridos explores the ongoing human trafficking problem that exists between the United States and Mexico. Featuring a monologue composed by Professor Lei Liang and performances by Distinguished Professor Aleck Karis (piano), Professor Susan Narucki (soprano) and faculty member Pablo Gomez (guitar), the CD has received attention from reviewers at Fanfare, Classical Voice North America, Musical Opinion and the San Francisco Classical Voice, to name a few.
Narucki is a Ninja warrior in her ability to traverse this unrelentingly difficult (both musically and emotionally) hour-long work with such immersive passion and intensity. All four composers make brilliantly imaginative use of the instrumental forces, and the astoundingly virtuosic players - Pablo Gomez on guitar, Aleck Karis on piano and Ayano Kataoka on percussion - are vital to the success of the performance. - Joshua Rosenblum, Opera News
