Unconscious inference is a cognitive principle formulated
by Hermann von Helmholtz:
- an automatic (involuntary or reflex-like) mechanism contributing
to visual impressions
- 3-D objects are automatically infered from cues present in a 2-D
pattern on the retina.
Figure 2:
Monsters of same size illustrate
unconscious inference.
