Signal to Quantization Error (SQNR)

When noise is a result of quantization error, we determine its audibility using the signal-to-quantization-noise-ratio (SQNR), determined by the ratio of

To determine audibility, the SQNR is provided in decibels (dB):

$\displaystyle 20\log_{10}\left(\frac{2^{n-1}}{1/2}\right)$    dB $\displaystyle =$ $\displaystyle 20\log_{10}\left(2^n\right)$    dB
  $\displaystyle =$ $\displaystyle n \times 20\log_{10}(2)$    dB
  $\displaystyle \approx$ $\displaystyle n \times 6$    dB
  $\displaystyle \approx$ $\displaystyle 96$    dB (for 16 bits)$\displaystyle .
