Sinusoids are fundamental in physics: many systems
oscillate in a quasi-sinusoidal motion known as
simple harmonic motion:
- repetitive movement through an equilibrium position
- maximum displacement on either side of equilibrium is equal (if
no losses).
Sound is bandlimited and may be
approximated by the sum of sinusoids (having frequencies up to a
maximum value).
